Banding older nubian goats. How old is too old?

Alternatives to banding?

ANSWER:

You can band an adult buck and how cooperative the adult buck will be depends on the buck.

However, the scrotum might be too large for the bander. There are a number of banders that will work with a adult goat or cow.

One of the cheaper but effective solutions is called a California Bander ($30-$50 depending on configuration). Still cheaper and less taxing on the buck.

You can find videos about its use and application on YouTube. Search for California Bander.

One thing that is not in the video is the reaction of the buck. 5 minutes after applying the band the bucks reactions were all normal. Less then an hour later he was acting like I had put the brain around his brain!

He was on the ground fussing about it acting like he was near death. By evening feeding everything was fine. By the next morning you would never know he was banded. All behaviour normal.

Some of the videos do not call attention to reaction by the buck clear and only mention it in passsing.

Consult your vet for professional advice.

That buck is fine today and is one well behaved goat.

Why would you band them at all. Most buyers of goats prefer intact males. Sure , there is some debate about growing faster or slower, easier to handle etc.

I don’t raise goats, though I have sheep, but I have never banded any of mine.

If you can get the rubber band around his scrotum you are good to go at any age. Sales barn is paying more for Billys for some reason right now.

Overseas markets do not seem to care whether goats are banded or not. Domestic meat goats are preferred banded.

Male goats have a disagreeable habit urinating on there faces to attrach does in heat. Mine do it all the time. The does love it, my wife is appalled.

I tell people at the petting zoo never pet a goat with a wet face!

You can band them even if the won't fit in a conventional bander.

One of the cheaper units $50, is called a California Bander. I banded a full size Nubian with it and other than being a two person job it was a snap. You could band an adult bull with that one!

I was referring to Muslims, who seem to be the biggest buyers of goats and sheep at the sale barns. They do drive the price up, and they much prefer intact males.

I agree with the urinating, you can tell if a billy is anywhere in the vicinity by the smell.

When I was in Fredericksburg at a sale, wethers did far outnumber intact males.
