Wait. Why would you tell them from the beginning that you didn't trust them or believe them? Seems counter productive.....

I think he's assuming it's like a mechanic checking a car who may claim you need a transmission when you do not. In that scenario, if you tell the mechanic ahead of time you're going to get a second opinion to verify, maybe you mitigate the risk of the scam recommendation.
Not sure doctors would have the same self-interest in erroneous diagnoses.
