I’m sure I’ll still be catching a sufficient amount of illnesses, especially with a kid. But if I know I’m going to be sharing a room with coughing strangers for an hour or two, why not take an easy measure to reduce the chance I’ll catch what they have?

To each their own and I respect your right to choose. I just wish the government would do their damn job and put out real scientific guidance. FACT - cloth mask doesn't do shite. If you want to make the choice to mask up then get a PROPERLY FITTED N95 mask and use it correctly.
