It cost $300 to have an actuary determine the lump sum cost to purchase 4 years towards retirement credit. Is there a rough idea on how to calculate that sum before paying the actuarial fee?

Are you a federal employee buying your military time back?

Be more specific. If you are a fed, no need to spend money on an actuary. Just send DD214 to OPM in accordance with the instructions that can be found on google.

Bought back 7 years here at the Post Office via OPM, paid 3% on total amount that was earned during active duty. No regrets, this will allow me to retire sooner.
