I like to make spending/fun money tied to behaviors like chores and grades, as opposed to an allowance or just buying them what they ask for. That said, $1000 is a lot, but i guess that is relative depending on your income and budget. $1000 may be pocket change for kids who go yachting or country clubbing with their private school friends.
