Maybe it wasn't based solely on time. It was "classic" because it was the Rock that instructed all to follow. The originators, the godfathers, the innovators, the legends...
Why would "the new crap" be considered classic? Some of it is very good, but for the most part it's not near as influential. (Some great exceptions of course.)
