That's because wages were better. I looked at the gross median wage for the Beaumont metro area in 1970 ( closest to LA) and it was $9,600 for an accountant. In today's dollars that would be $69,000. The average accountant in America's median wages in 2022 is $50,112. I am sure they are far lower in Louisiana.
