1913 was an annus horribilis in American history: the Federal Reserve was established, a progressive income tax was initiated and the 17th Amendment led to the direct election of Senators instead of their appointment by state legislators, effectively killing the doctrine of States’ rights. Woodrow Wilson also assumed office.

All these various elements coalesced to create a massive shift of centralized power to Washington D.C. and a severe dilution of the power of the individual states. It has been a downhill slide into tyranny ever since.
