honestly the role of the executive branch pre-Civil War and the relative power of the federal government versus the power of the state governments in those days was so unrecognizable to how we operate now that it’s a purely academic discussion and not super worthwhile with Buchanan vs Biden. Both were very ineffectual and weak leaders who failed to unite their nation for a common goal. That’s about all I can draw on to even compare the two.

Obviously Buchanan is going to catch immense flak for watching the nation fall apart under his watch and fail to respond with much urgency. But hey, it’s early for Biden. Let’s see what he can do in three more years

He was a do nothing President at the most crucial time in the nation's history up to that point. He did nothing to address the growing divide between the north and south during his Presidency. After Lincoln was elected he agreed that the southern states had the right to secede from the USA but did nothing to stop them either. He even refused to send representatives from the federal government to the Peace Conference of 1861 because he was content to leave the problems to Lincoln.
