i have read reports that the russians are already using tanks with smooth barrels (not rifled like traditional artillery) as artillery pieces.

That’s been the norm for tank main guns for decades both in the East & West. The last rifled main gun we used was the 105mm used on the M60 and original M1.

When the M1A1 was introduced in the late 80s, it came with a smoothbore 120mm main gun. The British Challenger and German Leopard II use the same gun as the Abrams.

As for the Russians, they’ve been using a smoothbore 125mm even longer. It was first used on the T-64 in the late 60s.

Smoothbore tank guns have a far longer life than rifled tank main guns.

Range is the big issue with tank rounds vs artillery rounds

Correct. Smooth bores allow for higher velocity, which is more important with AP rounds, vs traditional Artillery barrels that are rifled. This helps give the round spin for more accuracy and range at the cost of velocity. HE rounds dont need the velocity

tanks change their barrels evey 100-200 rounds (EFC rounds) due to accuracy fall off. Artillery barrels are changes every 1000-2000rounds (EFC)

So using a tank as an artillery piece weakens the tank from its primary role of anti-armor weapon.
