I’m going to be connecting my gutter downspouts to subsurface drainage in a few weeks. My yard slope is essentially zero directly behind my porch, and it holds water in several spots. It drains, but very slowly. This is partly caused by my downspouts dumping water into the yard.

My question is should I install a catch basin or French drain perforated pipe along the low spot? Picture my house as a capital L, with the long leg as the house and the short leg as my garage. The downspouts are on either end at the points. My low spot is right in the middle at the 90 where the long and short ends meet. Slope of yard goes parallel with the long end.

So I've been SLOWLY working on my yard drainage and fencing over the last year. My house is the same shape. I connected nonperforated french drains directly to my gutters which then run 10 or 15 feet and connect to perforated french drains that run down the sides of my yard into my ditch. In the back of my yard in the low spot I put a catch basin. The catch basin works great and I also like this fiber/mesh filter that sits in the catch basin to prevent sediment from flowing down the pipes. I also wrapped the perforated pipes in the same stuff and back filled with gravel to cover pipe and allow water to drain into the pipe. My gutter downspouts havent overflowed but I've only had this done for 1 year. Hope this helps some.

Big help. I really think once I tie in the downspouts that will solve most of my water problem. I shot the elevations with an instrument so it’s not guess work.

Yeah I used a tight string, string level and tape measure to make sure I had enough fall from the bottom of my catch drain to my ditch before I started digging for the corregated pipe otherwise I was looking at a sump pump and more $$$ and work.

You can always run that catch basin to connect with your gutter lines and use the same exit, 3in pvc would be enough for the basin
