The Batman (2022): Edward Nigma vs Edward Nashton (who is Nashton?)

If you didn't know, Paul Dano is playing "The Riddler" aka Edward Nashton. Usually, the last name is "Nigma". When did "Nashton" come into play? Are they the same person or someone new entirely?

Nashton is his name, big mama is the alter ego.

This time around, Reeves has opted to use The Riddler's birth name of Edward Nashton in place of his more recognizable alter-ego, Edward Nygma (or Nigma). In the comic books, his real name was revealed to be Edward Nygma, or E. Nygma - a pun on the word "enigma." But later DC continuity, following the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" event, established his birth name as Edward Nashton. Later, this version of the character would change his surname to Nigma in order to fit his supervillain persona, but it seems Reeves has embraced the more grounded "Nashton" for Paul Dano's Riddler in The Batman.

In the comics I think Nashton is his birth name and changes to Nigma once he develops into the Riddler character.

Think of it this way:
Kal-El - Clark Kent - Superman
Nashton - Nigma - Riddler
Kal-El - Clark Kent - Superman
Nashton - Nigma - Riddler

He didn't want the cast giggling at the villain, as in No Way Home with the Scooby kids laughing at the name Otto Octavius.

"Nigma"
I don't think you're allowed to say that word anymore

I actually didn’t know this but does change my viewpoint. It’s not a huge hang up or anything, I just hate when films change things like source material names for seemingly no reason. Stick to the sources that fans are familiar with is a better approach imo.
In this case, looks like they’ve done that just in a bit different way than we’ve seen before.

They probably forgot to include his last name on the “copy/replace all” step when converting the crime thriller 7even-like script to a Batman Script.

He used Grammarly to convert it, it tends to glitch like this.
