I'm too lazy to look it up, but I remember hearing that Will Ferrell worked in the sports information department at USC, either as a student or after he graduated. I know during the Reggie Bush years, he was on the sidelines for big games.

Yeah he’s close to their athletics department. IIRC, he did a bit with McConaughey during the pregame of the USC/Texas natty in 2006.
I don’t think this is purely an attention grab.

I'm pretty sure Ferrel started off in local sports broadcasting after he graduated
