One of the most depressing places I've ever been was an off track betting place. I imagine the people who are all in on this shite are just like those sad sacks at the OTB.

If you are ever depressed about your life, go to an OTB at 8:30am on a Tuesday

That's a whole different group of people. Before the OTB closed in port allen, for the three triple crown races someone would go place bets for for people and if you won you had to go there to cash in.

A few times I had to go there to cash in a ticket. I bet those races just for the fun of it so I never bet anything big so the few times I won, it wasn't a large amount, but it might have been the only time when I was handed cash and immediately felt uncomfortable.

It wasn't because of something specific, there wasn't anyone I saw eyeballing me or anything like that, it was the fact that you could sense that most of the people in there wasn't having a good day and the idea that you never know what someone who lost all of their money might do.

There was an area from the door to the parking lot that wasn't lighted well at all.. I was looking around the whole time, got in my van and locked the doors. I felt like a bitch, but like I said you don't know if someone there lost all of their money and don't want to go home to their wife to tell her he lost most of his paycheck.

At Evangeline Downs and the track in New Orleans there is a section where all the degenerates are. Just passing through there is depressing. I've seen people looking through all the tickets people throw on the flow.. I guess hoping to find a winner someone accidently threw away.

I have a story about the lengths people will go through to hide the fact they lost a bunch of money.

This guy I know, who works in a plant.. This was years ago, he is actually older than me, but I was in HS when it happened.

Every day after work he would go to the bar to have a few drinks before going home. Sometimes they would play cards. One Friday.. pay day.. They decided to play cards.. This guy ended up losing his whole pay check.

This was before direct depositing or when a lot of people still got a paper check, but not wanting to tell his wife what happened, he threw out his wallet. Drivers license and everything.. chucked it in the cane fields so that he could tell his wife he lost his wallet and because he check was in there he lost that week's pay.. because he rathered tell his we he lost his wallet on accident than tell her he lost all the money playing cards.

Meh...if you have a system it saves you a lot of time. You can just check off the games on your phone ibstead of driving to the Slipper and standing in line.
