It is a brick with an illuminated apple logo on the screen, can't get to anything on the phone to see what version it is running.

nope - let it run down, pressed the power button, bot the red dead battery, plug me in logo, plugged up, tried the three button hard reset and went right back to being a brick with an illuminated apple logo on the screen.
Got a new phone, all my data is safe on the new one. Still have some hope of fixing it to trade in or pass down to one of the kids, doesn't look good.
