Burt Reynolds and PTA didn’t get along at all during the filming. Burt got physical with PTA during the filming and they had to be separated. PTA was a young hot shot director and was telling Burt what to do. Burt told him to frick off and tried to walk off set towards the end of the movie.

I'd imagine Paul Thomas Anderson was probably higher than some of the characters portrayed in the film during shooting. He and Quentin Tarantino were known to go on insane cocaine binges together during that time frame.
