Most are grunts who aren’t skillful enough to make it in the private sector. Let’s not kid ourselves.

What federal job doesn’t allow you to retire with a pension after 20 years?

Not going to argue that, but there are plenty of exceptions. There's quite a few people I work with that could do just fine in the private sector. I've contemplated going back to private a few times, especially lately, and had a few offers. But it's hard to beat the benefits (why this thread is even a thing), and if I wanted to, I could put in half the effort I did in the private sector and still outperform most of my colleagues.

Uh, damn near every one now. It's 30 years service and 57 years old for most people under the new retirement system. The only way you can retire with 20 years of federal service and get your full retirement benefit is if you are 50 and a reduction in force or other action occurs, or if you are 60 years old.

Call it what you want. We still pay taxes.

Where I work, you will get put on probation for not doing what's considered the standard performance. Suspension follows after that.

The last 40 years may have seen a lazy government work force on some levels but it's gotten tightened up around here in the past decade or so.
