I bought all 3 of my kids "beaters" for their first car and I'll be darned if all three didn't get totaled. 2 of them were the other guys fault and my youngest daughter caused hers. I also wouldn't get a kid anything but a beater. The reason my bride and I don't owe anybody anything is that we get the good out of a vehicle before we replace it and we live in a house that I built for less than $15 a sq. ft. in 1978. We have relatives and one kid that apparently never understood arithmetic. I took Ben Franklin at his word "a small leak will sink a great ship". Spending 105% of your income will put you in bankruptcy, spending 95% will put you in prosperity. It is that simple.
