My Christmas present this year was a Kimber .308 hunt pro bolt action rifle. I’m scope shopping this week, and ideally I’d like to be able to use it for deer and hogs, and I’m partial to the ATN Xpro 4K, but when reading through the recs last night I’m kind of confused on whether or not I can have that scope on my deer rifle even if I’m not using the night vision, and might need to have a separate rifle dedicated for hogs and night prey. Anyone have any experience with that? If I can’t add it to the Kimber, then what’s your recommendation for a scope if I’m going to be buying two of them? Thanks in advance!

Not sure about legality but I think that as long as you are not shooting outside of the legal shooting times then you “should” be legal.
As for the scope buddy had one and they are shitty as far as image quality. It also had problems occasionally needing firmware updates and such. I wouldn’t want that and the need for a battery on a gun that I was potentially gonna use to shoot the louisiana state record deer with.
Get a leupold vx3 and have a dependable scope for a lifetime and save and get a thermal for hogs cus everyone I know that gets an atn ends up getting a thermal.

Easiest way to find out is to call the game wardens. I called and spoke with one, answered my question and that was that.

I only say that because the legality of those scopes may be changing year by year

It's even easier and safer to send an e-mail to LA Fish and Wildlife and ask them. There's always a chance the game warden might be wrong. An email provides a paper trail for you, as well

I'm not a hunter, so can someone clue me in. Why would a certain kind of scope be illegal to hunt with? I get why you don't want to let people run around the woods crippling animals with something like .17HMR, but what's the rationale between outlawing a kind of optic?

I think his concern is around the fact that the scope he wants has night vision.

The only trouble I think OP would possibly ever get into is if he shot something at dusk, and ran into Green Jeans while leaving the woods. Might be accused of hunting after hours if the warden heard some other shots, in the area, after dark.

Her, but yes.
My boyfriend bought the gun for me for Christmas, but also has a 30-06 that he’s never used that he bought a few years ago. I think what we’ve decided is to go with a leupold on the kimber, and then go in on a thermal for the 30-06 and make it the dedicated after dark gun, since it’s just taking up space in the gun safe right now.
I’m gonna try and find the info he was reading that made us think it might not be okay to have it on a deer rifle.
I really appreciate all y’all responding!
