The liberty bowl year he had the team "meet" in Memphis I believe. Meaning players had to get there on their own.

Christmas eve or day dinner was microwaved burritos at the 7-11 for some players if I remember that story correctly.

True story, I've heard some of the players recount that adventure. Wasn't a good idea then, but would be a disaster now giving that responsibility to our youth of this day and age.

Back in 97 when we played Notre Dame in the Liberty Bowl, I was in Tigerband and we had the option of getting back to campus and taking the buses to the game or just meeting in Shreveport. Coming from West Monroe, Shreveport was a shorter shot, so I just did that. The school paid you a stipend for gas/travel if you took that option, so I actually made a small profit, as well.

I'm pretty sure that the team and the other support orgs like cheerleaders had that option as well. I think it's more about what you can actually force/require for a game that is outside of the normal scope and held when school is not in session and housing not available on campus. Rules may have changed since then.

By the way, that particular game was freaking freezing, too, with lots of snow and ice. The university paid to have the entire band and all the cheerleaders hit the mall and buy whatever warm clothing we needed for the game. We bought that mall out of thermals, scarves, gloves, etc. It was still brutal. And Notre Dame still had dudes in kilts with bare legs out there like it was no big deal. Those guys were insane lol.

Ruffin Rodrique told a story on the radio about. The team thought they were going to the Aloha Bowl in Hawaii but the admin didn’t want to cover the costs. When it was announced it was Memphis, the team wasn’t exactly excited. So in this case, they actually did “opt out” mentally. The other two Arnsparger bowl losses were to Top 10, roided out Nebraska teams. No shame in those.
