quote:

Asked by Patrick if he would recruit current Irish commitments to LSU, and reminded by Patrick that Lincoln Riley in the days since he jettisoned Oklahoma for USC, had done just that very thing, Kelly emphasized he would not operate in that method.

“Of course not, Dan,” Kelly said. “Of course not.

Yeah, this isn't at all what was said.

He was talking to DP about when he took the LSU job. About how he was out recruiting for Notre Dame when he resigned from ND and took the LSU job. Dan jokingly asked him if he then followed up with the recruits to say "hey if you not interested in Notre Dame you can join me at LSU?"

That's when Kelly said of course not and they laughed.

Then DP brought up Riley and Kelly said the quote you cited.

Here's the link and what I'm referencing starts at about the 11 minute mark.

Nothing in that interview is him going on record that he's not going to target ND recruits.

I think this situation is more practical in nature than most of you are making it out to be. I don’t think Kelly will chase anyone who is committed to ND. Why bother? Why spend the time on guys spread out across the US who don’t have any relationships here other than him. What are chances we get any of them? If we were in the same boat as USC or UF, sure, but we aren’t. This class has a lot more potential upside at the moment than theirs do.

If anyone decommitts from ND, or if they haven’t committed yet, they are fair game and I think Kelly and our staff would at least consider chasing them. They would have a much better shot at pulling them than someone already committed who still has their position coach at ND. There will also be more time to spend doing this for anyone remaining after ESD.

For now, I just don’t see any mystery here. LSU’s class has a solid core Kelly and staff seem focused on holding that together, as well as working to pull a few high profile long-time targets in with them. When it comes to prioritizing the use of time, this seems like a no-brained.

Now it looks like they are also offering several 2nd tier, but solid looking, LA prospects to go with them. Just look at the odds we have of getting these guys on board when we desperately need numbers and players who will stick around. It looks to me like the staff is just playing the percentages and doing the smart thing here.
