My guess is Ron was told that Trump indictments will pile up and pave the way for him.

The issue will be whether or not the coming indictments further boost Trump or make him unelectable.

The hard core base will become more hard core as Trump is indicted. Ron can peel off some of the Trump base around the edges but his going to have to consolidate the rest of the field with traditional Republicans and he can get the nomination. MAGA base will fall in line in the general and Ron needs to keep making the case to them why he is the guy.
