Kelly said a couple of interesting things at his press conference...

Among them...
- He'll announce portal signees on Friday, and he threw out a number of "eight to 10" additions from the portal that he expects. We currently have four known portal commitments in Anderson, Swinson, Lee and Shand, so that's four to six more.
How many of those get announced on Friday we'll just have to find out.
- He was absolutely gushing about Ka'Morreun Pimpton. He was trying to be calm when he was asked about him, but he basically said he's never coached a tight end with as much raw physical ability.
- Kelly on Jalen Brown: "ELITE speed." He said he can take the top off "any defensive coverage."
- He said they'll be looking at defense for the February period and they're going to set up a January recruiting weekend to bring guys in. Specifically he said defensive line and defensive back are the two position groups where they're not done. Reading between the lines, you can imagine that Nyckolas Harbor and Jamel Howard are going to get a lot of focus, and then there will be a defensive back or two that we'll get on.
Other than Desmond Ricks, who he didn't talk about and who will be done tomorrow and not for February, we really don't have any defensive backs on the radar. So this might be an opportunity to do a little sleuthing to see who he's talking about.
- He said they've got 15 early enrollees out of this 25, and he said he's not bringing them in for bowl practices. He said that's a distraction. So we won't see those guys do anything until the spring.
- Kelly placed Da'Shawn Womack at the Jack linebacker spot and said he expects him to come in and immediately compete for the starting job there. So that clarifies the expectations where he's concerned.
- He gushed about Heard and Adams as offensive line additions. DJ Chester and Mubenga too. You get the impression Kelly expects his offensive line to be dominant very soon.
- He said running back was a major area of need, and it didn't sound like he was completely sold on Holly and Jackson filling it. But he didn't mention running back as a place we'd look for a transfer to add to. Not sure what to make of that.
Tomorrow and Friday sound like they're going to be eventful with Ricks and what could be a handful more transfers coming in.

A drama-free day with our current commit list plus adding Pimpton? I imagine I can get used to this…

I think he waits till the second portal window for the RB. Because if we keep all 6, he won’t want to add another IMO

I get it.
What I'm getting at is he said he'd still want to address the secondary in the February cycle.
He said something else interesting, too. He was asked whether the safeties in the class could flip to corner if needed, and he mentioned specifically that Ryan Yaites is definitely capable.
But he said that he's very comfortable with their numbers at corner where they are. That seems a little bit telling, because as of right now you've only got Banks, Welch, Toviano, Hughes and Stamps.
I don't think you get comfortable with anything less than seven corners on your roster.
So if he's saying that, it means he expects to bring in Ricks and Harris. At least that's how I took it.
So if he's saying he's good with his numbers at corner, but that he's still interested in adding guys in the secondary, I'm looking at safety as a target for February.
So who are the best unsigned safeties? Because I would guess we're going to try to sign one of them in February.

There are some solid safeties in the portal already. Might be a spot where we have an unknown guy signing this week

There's a kid out of Paetow High School in Katy, TX named CJ Johnson. He goes 6-2 and 200 pounds and he's a 3-star recruit. I don't see anybody who's out in front with him as yet.
Film is pretty good.
I wonder if he wouldn't be on our radar. He looks like a pretty good box safety and he might even be able to put on some weight and play linebacker.
