OT history buffs… I need your help. I’m the 8th great grandchild of Joseph Beausoleil Broussard (most Cajuns in SW LA are related to him somehow).

Most know the history of Joseph Beausoleil Broussard. If you don’t, I highly recommend reading up.

His father was Jean Francois Broussard but after him, the line stops. I’ve done some digging and there’s a link between Jean Francois and Isaac-Urbain Broussard BUT there’s a lot of gray area regarding that relationship.

Has anyone ever gotten past Jean Francois Broussard when tracing their lineage? TIA

I think my grandpa did get pretty far back if I remember right. Unfortunately he’s long gone and we didn’t have the best relationship (it was nonexistent honestly, he was an a-hole) with him the last decade plus of his life so I know very little to none of it.

Yeah, well, I'm a direct descendent of several generations of Angola prison inmates.

Sorry to hear that. The reason I’m digging is I’m actually planning on getting the family tree framed for my Grandpa’s birthday. Thought that would mean a lot to him.

My grandmother told us we are related. Like you said, many of us are (those with ancestors who came from the boats of Nova Scotia to South LA)

She knew the names, but I don’t. Abbeville and Cow Island Cajuns. Couvilllons, Bouillions, and Broussards
Eventually New Iberia.

So I’m not really any help right now. I’ll ask my mom

Have you visited the Acadian Museum in St. Martinville?

After Jean he would have been born in France in the early 1600's possibly late 1500s. You'd prob have to go to France or find French archives for that.

Is this Jean Francois that you speak of?

Yep that’s him but in that link, it says…

Wasn't he on the LSU D-line around 2009 or so?

Sometimes those things don’t end well and you discover the reason your forebears stopped recording or researching it.

My family history is similar to yours. France to Nova Scotia, then Louisiana in 1765. Like your family, my family is listed on the Wall of Names in St. Martinville. But my family initially settled in St. James on the Mississippi River before relocating to Attakapas.

The furthest we could go back is to a great grandfather who was born in Martaize, France in 1601. He was the one who emigrated to Nova Scotia.

Like previously said, going back any further would need to be researched in French records.
