Good. College football is really about more than only revenue-generation on paper. Mystiques generate far more revenue long-term than any appraisal of net worth or paper income projections can grasp or explain.

The passion of a fan-base is based in large parts on that mystique and that translates into marketability. Ask yourself, back in the bad old days when LSU wasn't winning (Pre-Dinardo) or even playing particularly well, why did Tiger Stadium still sell out?

It was the LSU mystique.

Things like Billy Cannon's Halloween Night Run is one example of mystique - priceless.
Rivalries like Auburn/Alabama or UGA/Florida can't be laid out totally to only dollars and cents.
The mystique of the SEC domination, and our winning MNCs by the boxload, esp. in recent years, is a prime example of this principle in action. You can't buy this kind of image.

It's an intangible, granted. But in college football, that intangible quality/mystique is as real or more real than the numbers on somebody's bottom line.

WVU brings that same quality into the SEC with their own storied program, a mystique all their own.

It looks to me like that makes them a natural to add-to not take-away from the overall SEC legend.

I agree with your point that the SEC "brand" is helped by mystique. I very much disagree that WVU brings that same quality to the table. I believe they would diminish our brand. Quick, name five famous football players from WVU. I can do that for most of the SEC, not for them.

If you disagree that is certainly your right, but I hope the people voicing opinions on this have actually experienced WVU/Morgantown. I have, and it is my firm belief that it doesn't fit.

I've been to Auburn (obvs), Athens, Tuscaloosa, Gainesville, Knoxville, Columbia, Nashville and Fayettville, Clemson, Blacksburg, Tallahassee and Morgantown and been to games in about half of them. I'd be happy to go back to any of them but Morgantown. That place is just horrible.

And WVU would be among the worst schools in the SEC academically.

IMO, they would just water down our conference. YMMV.

I can accept your experience with Morgantown. But to ask for the five names isn't a fair question - if you asked me to name five famous players from Auburn, I might have to stop at Pat Sullivan (questionable) and Bo Jackson, and then your immediate past QB Cam Newton. Beyond that I'd be at a loss and I'm SEC all my life.

How big a check are they sending? Or are the SEC schools willing to take a smaller share out of the goodness in their hearts?

Really? You couldn't name two more Auburn players other than our three Heismans? No Cadillac Williams, Ronnie Brown, Tracy Rocker, Takeo Spikes, Stephen Davis, Rudi Williams, Karlos Dansby, etc? Most of those guys had pretty decent NFL careers.

I feel like with a little thought I could name five players from Bama, Tenn, LSU, Georgia, Florida and maybe Arkansas.

McMurphyCBS Brett McMurphy
Multiple Big East sources said they have been told by WVU officials that WVU rejected by ACC & SEC

Just how famous do they need to be?

Marc Bulger, Chris Henry, Pat White, Amos Zereoue, and Adrian Murrell all from fairly recent history were pretty damn good college players.

I know Bobby Bowden coached there in the 70s and they had Don Nehlen for what seemed like forever.

Just a couple more that were big pros. (minus Harris)

Pacman Jones, Jeff Hostetler, Major Harris, Steve Slaton, Mike Vanderjagt, Todd Saurbrun

And the biggest on the list....Sam Huff

I want WVU, assuming we take A&M as well.

For the record, I don't want A&M. I don't want expansion.

Sam Huff
Marc Bulger
Chris Henry
Pac Man Jones
Darryl Talley
Ira Rodgers
Mike Fox
Jeff Hostetler
Chuck Howley
Oliver Luck
Solomon Page
Ron Wolfley

If you dont know any of them. Look them up. They all had pretty good NFL careers..

And last I checked, this is College, not the NFL. Plenty of College players are great but wont be anything in the NFL.. (Pat white for example, and many from all SEC teams) *cough*tebow*cough*

ECON 101 - I could use a refresher. ACCTNG 101 might do you some good. Adding teams to the conference has very little impact on travel cost. Take football for example - teams play 8 conference games 4 at home and 4 away. After adding teams to the conference and keep the schedule at 8 you still play 4 games at home and 4 games away. 4 away games equals 4 away games. Travel is travel and the difference in expenses to travel to WVU compared to Tenn, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and etc is negligible. If the conference schedule goes to 9 games then the schools drop OOC opponents where travel is involved. LSU would drop Oregon from their schedule. Really from LSU's point of view it is a moot point looking at who and where they play this weekend. This same situation will hold true in scheduling for all sports. When all said and done the number of home games scheduled as opposed to away games will remain virtually the same. Travel cost is really a non-issue and no where close to the 23 million dollars as suggested.

Nice, but you said "Quick, name..." It's a little bit disingenuous to make that a litmus test - WVU hasn't been in the SEC before, and why would we know their big names from down here in the SEC world? If I said to you, "Quick, name five big names from Texas A&M or TCU or Penn State, you might be a fountain of stats, but you might not be able to do that "quick"

really?? No shite we already discussed why I was wrong. I admitted it, I made a mistake. But to say travel for all other sports besides football is a much dumber statement then I made.

doesn't matter now WVU was told don't call us, we will call you.

Just curious, for those of you who want WVU in the SEC, have you ever been to Morgantown and met their fans?
