A corporation that is primarily a news program has no business whatsoever favoring 1 team and it's conference over the rest of the country. It's a major conflict of interest inherent in the relationship it has contracted with that 1 team. It has an obligation as a sports reporting organization to fairly report and editorialize. The fact that it's contract with that 1 team precludes that obligation means that it is no longer in the reporting business, but the sports business period. NBC started all this with it's ND exclusive contract. Now neither organization is trusted as an exclusive sports reporting business.

Outkick The Coverage - ESPN Losing the Future
I accept Clay's arguments in a static marketplace but espn will likely recognize this and maneuver around these issues. I personally would love to see espn lose their current grip on sports.
quote:
At its essence ESPN is a middle man. That is the network exists to bring the content of someone else to your home or business.
quote:
But today I'm here to tell you that ESPN has already lost the battle for the future of sports.
quote:
Before you dismiss this idea, let me ask you a simple question: what does ESPN create that you absolutely, positively must watch? (Exclude all games from this equation because ESPN doesn't create any of those, it just airs them in partnership with the leagues).
You're still thinking, aren't you?
quote:
Therein lies the problem. It's already starting, but at some point in the next decade and beyond the leagues aren't going to partner with ESPN any longer. At least not in the way that they are now, with their biggest games as showpieces on the network's properties.
And once ESPN doesn't have the games, who is going to watch the network?
quote:
Put simply, ESPN doesn't create any programming that is must see television.
(At this point, I will acknowledge an exception for ESPN's 30 for 30 series. This is the best thing the network has done in a decade. The only programming that was truly as riveting as something you would see on HBO.)

ESPN's Conflict of Interests Issues Regarding Conference Realignment
This article was published at the height of the A&M smear campaign.
Clay's take on ESPN seems to be spot on in my opinion. It is interesting that he is one of the few that point out these types of issues. Now with the reporting going on that ESPN actually guided Pitt and Syracuse into the ACC, I would expect this viewpoint to become more accepted.
quote:
Because ESPN/ABC presently has contractual relationships with the SEC, the Big East, the Big 12, the Big Ten, the Pac 12, and the ACC. Eventually two of these conferences are not going to exist in their present states. We can pretty much guarantee that the SEC, the Big Ten, and the Pac 12 will be three of these mega-conferences. But which will be the fourth?
More interestingly, how is ESPN going to reconcile its conflicting contractual positions with all of these conferences as this conference realignment shakes itself out in years going forward?
Put simply, by paying its lawyers an absolute ton of money to keep the network from getting sued for breach of contract.
quote:
ESPN's conflict is THE story right now. That's it, what everyone following A&M should be reading and commenting upon.
I'm not saying you can't trust ESPN's coverage, just that it's every bit as biased -- in fact, much more so -- than the websites that it won't cite for breaking news stories.

I agree with your points, save this one:
We aren't abandoning anything, because we had simply agreed to join, with certain scenarios laid out which allowed us to back out of that agreement to join. TCU signed up to join a conference with Syracuse and Pitt with the promise of the conference being proactive to protect its BCS autobid. We didn't sign up to join a conference that was raided and plans to replace its lost teams with service academies and UCF/ECU. This scenario was even laid out in the contract.
quote:
True, but TCU's abandoning the Big East before it even got there to join the Big XII is pretty much right on point. But no objections from ESPN.

Good. Mizzou don't belong in the SEC. I was watching the Kansas State vs Mizzou game on ABC, I have to admit I enjoyed watching those 2 teams play each other. I can't imagine Mizzou playing Vandy, Georgia, Florida, Kentucky, etc on a yearly basis.
