He said that if the Big 12 is truly fracturing, Oklahoma and Texas could put a TV package together, play each other each year and compete as independents for a national championship.
Interesting comments. My initial take is how can independents survive in the constantly changing landscape of college football? But you would think if anybody could, they might.

Nope. I think the other schools wouldn't let it happen. OU couldn't, but UT might be able to. But I think everyone is already pissed enough at ND to let something like that happen.

Hmmm, if they were seriously interested they could do it
Esp if they worked with Notre Dame to play every year - now that would be guaranteed television ratings
They could play a FSU 90s level schedule - a few great programs and a bunch of tomato cans

as conferences expand, the challenge for them would be putting together a half-way decent schedule every year.

They only school that seems to like being an Indy is Notre Dame and it still doesn't make much sense to go without a conference

That's what my initial take was. How could they put a tough enough schedule together as an independent to compete for the MNC on an annual basis. I personally don't see it happening.

That might work for football, but what about for the other sports? Even as a CFB independent, ND is in the Big East for everything else.
I don't see the Pac11 saying "Well, you said no to us for football but come on over anyway for everything else." Honestly I don't think any real major conference would allow partial competition.

All they need do is like ND belong to a conference for all other sports but football, go independent there. Then you gain all aspects of the conference but when it comes to the real cash cow it stays with them and not the conference. That is how ND is doing it, you tell me what university will not play ND? That's right no one they all clamor each year for a piece of ND's cash cow. So yes I believe Texas can make it without joining a conference in football, but they will need a conference for their non-revenue sports in order for them compete in. ND has the Big East who will take Texas in I wonder? Just an opinion to throw out there that's all.

I agree. I don't see a conference taking OU or UT or both for everything but football.
