Colin says the SEC wants you guys because the SEC wants to get into TEXAS and get the athletes. The SEC is basically using you. Do the other schools like Houston, Texas, Baylor, TT, etc feel the SEC will now raid Texas if you guys leave. Are the they as worried about the SEC like ESPN folks.

Cowherd seemed pissed about it, basically said you'll eventually leave for the SEC and will be a nobody, etc. I know the bashing have something to do with the ESPN deal with Texas which is making ESPN folks mad.

To be honest I think aTm will do good in the SEC. I want them in the SEC. I can remember my first visit to LSU's campus in 1995, LSU was playing you guys in College Station that same day. I always thought LSU vs aTm was a good rivalry. But a part of me also want the Big 12 to stay together.

I think if anything, A&M will get better athletes now that they will be in the sec. In the big 2, Texas athletes would usually pick UT. Now, if the best athletes in Texas want to stay home and play big boy football, they will go to A&M.

That's what I think. I recorded The Herd and started laughing. The man seemed PISSED about TAMU wanting to leave. Saying SEC schools want to play in Texas so they can get the athletes, raid the state.

Doesn't LSU already do a good job a raiding east TX?

Yes, and I think LSU will continue to do well in East and SE Texas regardless. Some kids just want to get away from home for college, and the culture of LSU is also great in a different way than A&M.

We're just in the down part of our cycle right now. If we'd been having this discussion at the breakup of the SWC it would have sounded much different. Texas was just beginning to gain momentum back, LSU wasn't much to celebrate and OU was terrible.

While I was in school the OU game was the biggest gimme on the schedule. We had a game against them where they didn't get a FIRST DOWN until late in the third quarter.

Scores against OU in the SWC/Big 12 transition

'94 A&M 36 OU 14 OU was 6-6 this year
'96 A&M 33 OU 16 OU was 3-8
'97 A&M 51 OU 7 OU was 4-8
'98 A&M 29 OU 0 OU was 5-6

Then OU gets Stoops and the rest is history.

No doubt any league would have been thrilled to have OU, even during that period, but at that time they would get slammed because they sucked and would be a lower tier SEC team.

There is absolutely no reason A&M shouldn't be able to compete at the highest levels in the SEC consistently. If we can't it will be because we can't hire the right coach to get it done. We've already shown we'll pay as much as any school in the country, we just made a TERRIBLE mistake hiring Fran and have been paying for it since then. I have hopes that Sherman is the right guy. This year will go a long way in showing that.

And as far as recruiting goes, take a look at the class Sherman is putting together this year. It doesn't hurt to stockpile talent like Texas does, but I think you can be competitive at the highest level maintaining Top 15 recruiting classes with playmakers at the key positions, namely QB.

That argument makes no sense.

LSU is going to get MORE athletes from Texas if Texas A&M joins the SEC?

That is stupid. Top half SEC schools out-recruit those Texas schools constantly. Bama, Auburn, UGA, and UF isn't going to abandon their local talent for TX kids. They may come in to pick up a couple of guys that they may not find locally that year. To me, Florida has become more fertile than Texas and I guarantee that those schools will continue targeting that area. Arky and LSU has always recruited well in Texas. Not going to be that big of a boost for LSU but more-so for Arky. It's all about the money. Increasing the population base by 50% will command a lot of money from television networks.

I think SEC teams gain a little more access, but nothing too ridiculous. LSU probably gains the most. The usual hangup for kids to leave their home-state is leaving their family behind and not being able to watch games. LSU, however, is 5-7 hours from the recruiting hot beds in Texas so that problem will hardly be an issue. A&M I think will cash-in pretty well, the best players want to play with the best, so an in-state avenue to the SEC would be popular. I think utexas and OU would suffer some, probably level out recruiting in the state more, but by no means no extreme change. The SEC will gain more relevance, so all teams would benefit to an extent-again nothing major though.

by a long shot.

in east texas, the only time LSU got any newspaper coverage is when Flynn was QB in 07 (Flynn is from Tyler)

with aTm in the conference, the newspapers will expand coverage to the SEC. This will greatly help teams like LSU and Ark, whom border texas.

Any media who is stating that this is about anything more than $$$ is either extremely dense or has an agenda.

As stated a million times A&M wants to be in a conference that offers stability and money. They have a huge base and very lucrative TV markets that are extremely appealing to a league.

The SEC wants to make money and by gaining A&M they not only increase their footprint by about 50%, they also get to renegotiate a contract that has recently been eclipsed by the contracts of other conferences.

The fact that A&M adds to the conference academically (adds a third AAU school to join Vandy and Florida in the conference) and athletically are icing on the cake. Culturally, they're a decent fit and about the best fit of any team they could expand to take.

To say the SEC only wants to add A&M because they want to "recruit Texas" is frickin' dumb.

With Frank Wilson as the recruiting coordinator, the program has been targeting more in-state prospects than ever. He doesn't believe in offering most of the schollies in neighboring states and all the way to Istanbul if he knows there is talent just around the block. We will be seeing around 18 in-state kids per class with around 7 from OOS and that doesn't necessarily mean they will come from TX. There is all sorts of influence in MS and along I-10 all the way to Florida. LA isn't talent deprived like Oklahoma. LA produces the most NFL talent per capita in the entire country.

Cowherd seemed to be mad about aTm as if it's personally affecting him. Hell I'm like don't ESPN have a contract with the SEC, what the hell is he banging on aTm and the SEC for. Then he went on a rant how aTm can't compete in the Big 12 as it is and they'll get even worse in the SEC and STILL be Texas lil brother.

He is mad because the only school that will be adversely affected recruiting-wise is Texas. A&M will get better recruits who want to play in the SEC, and other SEC schools, particularly LSU and Arkie, will win over some more Texas recruits as well.

We will face an uphill battle for a few years, but after that I think we start to contend in the West.

Cowherd is a blithering idiot! I personally think A&M joining the SEC is a great idea. It’s a win win situation for many reasons and I don't think A&M's uphill battle will be as long as you think.
