"Out of Conference" Conference Games

Sounds like a weird concept but I don't know what the rules are on this.
Say the SEC expands to 16 and has some major east/west realignment and many of the every year rivalries that happen usually because they're in the same division are no longer every year because one is now east and the other is now west. Sure you could do maybe one permanent opponent for everyone, but at some point, things collapse with appeasing/keeping every rivalry game annually at some point. Bama/Tennessee auburn/georgia etc. At some point, not everyone gets to keep playing people they've played every year for decades anymore.
Is it possible for say auburn and Georgia to play each other and (even though they are in the same conference) not to count as a conference game? I mean at some point, the game either can't be played because certain teams can't play more conference games or you can play them and just not count as conference games.
Is that even possible?

Colorado and Cal played a "non-conference" game this year

That was because it was scheduled while CU was still in the Big 12. It is possible, but would be lame.
It's become kind of popular in college baseball. It's a weird thing to witness. I went to a non-conference A&M baseball game at Baylor. It felt kind of like the NFL preseaon.

Yes, I believe that Alabama played Ole Miss before in a non conference game.
Now will that happen probably not.

Wut ?
Example: LSU playing Vandy (both in sec) and it not counting as an sec game (just scheduling a game between two schools like LSU would with say west Virginia)
I know there's no reason to do it now, but if the sec goes to 16, major annual rivalries may not be able to occur without such a concept.
Edit: not to imply LSU/vandy is one of such "rivalries"

I know it's different, but this happens in SEC baseball.

Didn't Bama use to schedule an extra conference game in the 70's?

At some point you'll stop saying at some point.

At some point you'll stop saying at some point.
At some point you'll provide something meaningful to the discussion

It used to be possible - talking 1970s or 1960s here. Bama and Ole Miss scheduled some. I have to believe it wouldn't permitted nowadays, primarily because the conference branding and marketing is much stronger than it was and there is a conference television contract now. I can't believe CBS/ESPN would let two conference teams play each other on another network, and they would not want to televise a game between two conference members while admitting that it "doesn't count".
