Missouri has their own style of barbeque. Therefore, they are Southern. I don' think they are a must have, but I don't think they get rejected out of hand. Besides, their hatred of Kansas dates back to the Civil War... another point in the Southern column.

I can't believe a fricking tamu weirdo would call another fanbase out for wanting to take up with the SEC because they were mistreated by a bully school.

Oh I know the type you are talking about. Those are the pricks who went to one of the private schools in the area who slobber over going to Northwestern, Notre Dame, and Michigan.
Funny thing is I can spot those pricks out anywhere. I was in Winston-Salem, NC at a bar wearing my Cardinals hat. This guy strolls up and asks me if I am from St. Louis. I said yes, and the next question he asks.. "What high school did you go to?"
If you ever run into anyone who asks that, odds are high they are a snob who went to a private high school. That same crowd though looks down on Mizzou as well.

Most of the people from the Columbia area trace their roots to the south. That's why that area had slavery and plantations, hate KANSAS and the term Jayhawks with a passion. And for STL area, most of the blacks trace their roots to Louisiana and Mississippi, moved STL area after the civil war and during the civil rights era.
ETA: The Ozarks are as southern as you get. Missouri is sorta like Texas, in Texas you have the SOUTH/WEST mix. Missouri you have the SOUTH/MIDWEST mix. The country folks even pronounce the state as MISSOURA instead of Missouree.

I grew up in the Ozarks, which might as well be the South. You can say that for most of Southern Missouri but as for the rest of the state (North of I-70) that area is not Southern, not even close.
You could say that for a huge part of Texas, and Florida. North Carolina, Virginia.

Hey Southern brother, I like it and I like the part in the link that talks about Kentucky. Definitely a blue state.

Florida may be in the geographic South, but the population is overwhelmingly Midwest/Northeast by heritage. It is absolutely rare to run into somebody whose Florida roots go back to real Southern bloodlines.
You could say that for... Florida.

I have a hard time convincing myself that Arkansas is in the south. Even here in Louisiana we are not traditional southerners.
Once you cross the Mississippi River going east you are in the Deep South so BR qualifies but a lot of the state does not.

Guess what, boys. I grew up in the Bootheel. How many of you know that Stonewall Jackson lived in present day Mississippi County for a while as a boy. None? That doesn't surprise me. How many of you know that there is more cotton raised in the Missouri Bootheel than the entire State of Mississippi? None? That doesn't surprise me. If anyone thinks there is anything Yankee about the Bootheel then go there, say it and count the seconds before you get your arse whipped.
Little Dixie is the counties up the Missouri River from just east of Jefferson City to Kansas City. That area is southern to the core. How many of you know that they raise more tobacco than the entire State of Maryland? None? That doesn't surprise me. They also distill Bourbon, although it can't be called that because the distillery is not in Kentucky.
Don't associate all of Missouri with St. Louis. In 1840, St. Louis and New Orleans were virtually indistinguishable, but then all the socialist scum started moving in after they got their sorry asses kicked out of Germany. That literally changed the complexion of the city. St. Louis was still very southern as late as 1860 as far as the native born population was concerned. It was the German socialists who screwed up everything. St. Louis has an identity crisis even today. The rest of the state does not.
Missourians fought the War Between the States. They suffered a HELL of a lot more from Yankee oppression and war crimes than people from Louisiana, Georgia, South Carolina or Virginia. That is a fact. They started fighting it long before Fort Sumter and continued to fight it long after Appomattox. Anyone who didn't know that does not know jack about history. So learn it.
ETA: The Marching Mizzou Band still played Dixie long after the Golden Band, if indeed the Golden Band ever did.

There are a lot of subcultures in the South. Compare Northern VA, NC, and SC. Each a bit different, so is MS, TN and LA. Each unique but each Southern. Arkansas is Southern, with huge differences between each part of the state.

Your link lost me when he said the Civil War was about slavery.
Also if Mizzou does somehow wiggle their way into the SEC, there will most definitely be a name change clause. You can call yourselves the Wildcats, Plainsmen, anything but Tigers.

My parents live in Columbia, MO and I have to say that Central Missouri is definitely southern. Most of the people there trace their roots back to Kentucky and Tennessee (and before that to Virginia). As a matter of fact, I was having beers with my bro (a student at Mizzou) and we saw a truck roll by with a huge battle flag proudly displayed. Adding the St Louis and KC markets to the SEC would be a smart move in my opinion. By the way, RIR, love the painting of Bloody Bill. Have you ever been to his gravesite in Richmond, MO?

I guess Harry S. Truman is your vision of a Southern
I mean he lived in the geographic area you define as "southern" even though it is total mid western.

Great post. I wonder how many people have actually spent any time in the majority of Missouri. Not just Springfield or St. Louis. If aTm "fits" then that means these people think Houston is "true southern. GTFO. They are as southern as Dallas, or Stillwater, OK for that matter. Nothing about most of Oklahoma is southern.

They're like sister cities. Both of them are very proud of their french heritage. You'd see a lot of Fleur de lis symbols in STL, even in the flag just like in New Orleans.

I've lived in Kansas and Missouri. Born in Louisiana. You can tell the difference just by crossing the state lines. Towns and culture have a different feel between the states of Kansas and Missouri. I went to schools in Kansas, they'd teach you all the bad things about the south, how MISSOURIANS or "Border Ruffians" would cross the state line murdering people, burned Lawrence, caused terror and trouble. Hell being a young kid in Kansas it'd send chills up your spine learning about the evil people from Missouri.lol. The 2 states have a different history and feel.
