re: Louisiana BCS schools

The only other school that I could see making it as an AQ would be Tulane being that they play in a very nice stadium and are in the biggest metro in LA. All of the other schools do not have the facilities or the following. There's enough people in New Orleans that don't support LSU that would likely support Tulane more if they were in a BCS conference and were competitive. All of the other schools are 2nd rate when it comes to sports.

If you are looking at just raw population, there are 4 other states within 10% of Louisiana: Colorado 10% more, Alabama 5% more, South Carolina 2% more, and Kentucky 4% Less.
All but Colorado support 2 BCS conference teams. That said, I don't think LA should try to gain another and nor do I want them to.
FWIW these states all have a lower populations and more than one BCS conference schools:
Oregon, Oklahoma, Iowa, Mississippi, Kansas, and Utah (kind of maybe technically with BYU indy?)

The trouble with Tulane is they are seen as people from Tennessee see Vandy, but worse. The Greenies themselves are not a very endearing group to begin with. They often alienate themselves with their elitist attitudes, and their alumni are mostly from the Northeast and go back there once they graduate. That again is all on Tulane for going after all that money found in the Northeast when recruiting people to come to school there. They will never really be seen as a down home team to follow because although they are located here, their heart is not in NOLA, but in the Northeast. Tulane will never rise again. They are over.
If there is to be another powerful football team in Louisiana it will probably come from La Tech if anyone IMO.

I don't disagree, but alum are not the one ones interested. There are thousands of people in NOLA affiliated with or employed by Tulane. Sure students come and go but you can't say they are not firmly rooted in the community.

This, most of Tulane's "fans" have no ties to the school.

Which would explain why they have such trouble in filling the stands. It's difficult for a down home people to have much in common with a school that is full of such elitists, and really doesn't even focus their efforts on attracting local people to go to school there, but then again, who in the hell can afford the damn tuition? Not many people have a couple of hundred thousand to slap down on their kid's tuition in New Orleans.
My uncle and best friend both went to Tulane on athletic scholarships, and both would agree with what I'm saying. Tulane does it to themselves.

I wish Iowa only had one BCS school. The two main reasons why LSU is so dominant is because of in state talent and that LSU is the only BCS school in the state. Could you imagine if Alabama or Mississippi only had one BCS level school?

No doubt it helps but it's not one of two reasons.

Obviously there are many reasons, but I think the MAIN two reasons are in state talent and being the only BCS school in the state.

The problem is Louisiana has too many schools period. With the small population you can't support:
1. La Tech
2. Tulane
3. UNO
4. Nicholls St.
5. McNeese
6. UL - Lafayette
7. UL - Monroe
8. Southeastern
9. Northwestern St.
10. Southern
11. Grambling
12. Centenary
Tulane can be supported solely by NO like it is now. La. Tech naaaaa. UNO not enough pull. Nicholls State. Great School AAU, but all the students pull for LSU
McNeese, Southern and Grambling HBU institutes, don't know if they will be willing to give that up. ULL good fit ULM not so much, but better recruiting in Ark and Tx. Southeastern Lions same thing as applied to Nicholls, I went to both Univ. N.Western Same argument as ULM but sub Mis. for Tx.

FTL, curious what kind of order that list is in? Is that athletic relevancy? Or football relevancy? My friend here in Lafayette would just love that! He thinks ULL is 2nd behind LSU in the pecking order.
I thought I might get grief for the order, but honestly I just listed the schools as they popped into my head.
