Nice town, has all that you need without being too crowded. I live in Jeff City and Columbia attracts more businesses like restaurants than we do here. Crime is not bad at all. It's a college town and not very big. I moved to the area from Nashville and am glad to be out of that cluster frick of a city.
Hopefully someone that live in Columbia can give you details. Possible move in your future?

Recruiter called my house with what looks like a good job there and my wife wanted me to find out about the town.

If you are looking for city life then it's not what you want, but if you are looking for a good size town with a laid back lifestyle you will like it. KC and StL are only 1.5 to 2 hours away. If you like hunting and fishing you will love it. One bonus is the SEC coming, I never imagined when I moved here I would be able to drive 30 minutes to see the Vols play.

Overall... that sounds pretty good. I am definitely looking for a laid back place with good outdoors things to do, and a safe family environment.

I'm used to Nashville where three major interstates merge downtown and everyone is agressive on the road, I have to admit sometimes the drivers here are a little too laid back for me.
You would be about 1.5 hours from Lake of the Ozarks, largest man made lake in the county it's kind of like the Pigeon Forge of lakes. Float trips are a big thing for people to do, and a ton of lakes and rivers to fish/camp. Hunting season is serious bidness here. It's the cave state so you can do a lot of spelunking if you like.

I spent seven years there in the 90s. The town really seems to revolve around the university. So summers are great because all the infrastructure is built to handle twice the population. Good restaurants, fair shopping and Mizzou sports. If you like to bow hunt there are some great public areas with huge deer. Plenty of other hunting and fishing options.i wouldn't hesitate to move back if I had a job opportunity.

Living in Columbia (MO) really gives you a taste of everything. Anywhere in downtown is about 15 minutes from the country.
It's a nice college town with a mix of young adults and families. I lived there as a student, and it really depends on where you spend your time. I spent it mainly on the campus and forgot at times that there was more than just downtown and Mizzou.
As far as family life, it's a wonderful place to raise a family. Downtown really caters more to the students because of its proximity to the campus, but there's plenty of areas that are family friendly. You just have to know where to go. The cost of living is also fairly lower than the big cities.
Columbia's definitely one of those places you have to visit to know what it's really like. It's a melting pot of the big city life with small town values. I think it's representative of the whole state, really. Just a mix of all areas of the state. Hope to see everyone up here next season!

Great place. My parents live there. Beautiful downtown area with several good restaurants including Vietnamese, pizza, Middle Eastern, and Indian. Lots of parks and open space in the surrounding countryside. I would describe it as the quintessential college town. Everything revolves around the university which provides a good multi-cultural dynamic. As for schools, Hickman High School is rated as one of the best public schools in the nation. Rockbridge is newer but also has a good reputation. As for living, I would look at the south side of town as the north side (above I-70) can get a little sketchy.
