Agree 100%. He's as shady as they come. I wouldn't be surprised to find out he was on the take in this ticket scheme, or at least let it go with a nod and a wink. He may be retiring, but he was fired.
Ever since the Mangino incident, everything has spiraled out of control. I agree... he's getting a taste of his own medicine. This isn't "retirement," and Mangino's departure wasn't "resignation."
To be honest, Chancellor Gray-Little isn't necessarily making any friends either. Allowing Perkins to stay and assist her in finding a new athletic director? That's bullshite.
There are some serious politics played in this game right now, and I guarantee you, Perkins will place a puppet in there, and he'll still be getting a nice pension from the university.

Yeah, I think it was them. Maybe Lawrence is a better fit "culturally" than College Station. They don't want to be the only liberals in the Pac-16. Lawrence, Boulder, Berkeley and Austin actually have a lot in common. College Station, Lubbock and Stillwater not so much.
Very true. I can't wait to welcome all the Berkeley hippies to town if we make it to the Pac-16...
If not, BYU is going to shite when they come to town. I think the vulgarity will get to them.

She's so new, she probably needs all the help she can get. As long as she doesn't hire the Pump brothers to help with the search...
It would be nice to know which way we were going before we brought someone in. I imagine the "KU in the Big-10" pool would be a lot bigger than the "KU in the Mountain West" pool.

I hate BYU. Air Force has been their bitch since 1959. I don't think the "love thy neighbor" part made it into the Book of Mormon, either. They can hang their fancy underpants with Baylor and TCU.

what have you guys seen that makes you think the Big 10 is actually interested in Kansas?
Not trying to kick you when you're down but you guys seem fairly delusional unless there's something obvious I'm missing

We fit the criteria for the Big Ten. If they want AAU institutions, we've been in it since 1909.
I don't really care about basketball so much, and I know that's sacrilege in this part of the country, but LSU football and baseball ruined me. At least I still have them to follow if KU does go to the MWC. I'll still go to those God-forsaken 11:00 AM games.

It's merely conjecture at this point. People are throwing out all kinds of possibilities right now. I haven't even made an attempt to realign conferences to my liking because none of it makes sense. Everything was fine until now.

How is Missou any less relevant than half the SEC? Solid B'ball school, average football school. How are they less relevant than Ole Miss, Moo U, Vandy, Arkansas, S.Car and in the last decade Tennessee?

The Big-10 was the first conference to say they would go as high as 16. For the next four spots, you have:
1) Notre Dame: Obvious #1 choice, but unlikely
2) Pitt: Already have PA. Not AAU ETA: Yes they are
3) Rutgers: Do people in New York really care about college sports?
4) UConn: Probably a decent choice ETA: Not AAU
5) Syracuse: Good hoops but HORRIBLE in football. Small market that does not deliver NYC.
6) Maryland. DC market, but mostly a hoops school
7) Mizzou: Good fit. AAU school. Rivalry with Illinois, STL and KC markets.
8) KU: AAU school. Better than any current Big-10 member in hoops, regional fit. Plus, you have to have something to show on the Big-10 network after football season ends. KU hoops would get them through March.
I think KU and MU finish in the top 4 out of those 8.

Pitt is actually an AAU member. 1974.

Not sure if Nebraska goes to Mizzou or Mizzou goes to Nebraska this year but if Nebraska goes to Mizzou I imagine the fans will boo the Cornhuskers out of the building for taking the Big 10 spot they wanted.

My bad. Had them confused with UConn, who is not AAU.
Posted on 6/12/10 at 9:45 pm to RockChalkTiger
UCONN and Syracuse are probably significantly lower on that list IMO. Rutgers is the correct play for the New York market and UCONN delivers no substantial market (it's regional to hartford CT mostly - and hartford is small)

UConn has mega hoops (guys and chicks), up and coming football, decent enough baseball to get a regional, and would give the Big-10 six D1 hockey programs (the magic number to get their hockey league off the ground. Right now Minny and Wiscy play in the WCHA, while Michigan, MSU and OSU are in the CCHA. Having their own hockey league would be a HUGE plus for their network.)
Out of the 8 available, I think it's Uconn, Rutgers (or maybe Maryland), KU and MU. I think it's going to be pretty tough to raid the ACC, though. They have a nice TV deal and Maryland is tied to them in lacrosse and hoops.

I see you think it's about basketball somehow - considering how weak the UCONN football program is I think that's really unlikely
Neither basketball nor hockey seem to have a significant role in what is going on - it seems to be about football and media markets (rutgers over syracuse, PSU instead of pitt, Maryland and Missouri over UCONN)

What about those recent sanctions on the UConn team? How much will that effect their program?
Posted on 6/12/10 at 9:59 pm to molsusports
Hockey IS about media markets in the Midwest. Wisconsin draws 15,000/game over a 36-game season, and most of the games are on Fox affiliates now.
I think it's about money. Plenty of people are going to tune in to watch Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State and Nebraska football. But what do you do to keep the netwok ad revenue rolling in between January and September? Hoops and hockey make Jan-March almost as profitable as the fall. (Hockey plays Fri & Sat., hoops almost every night) Nebraska scratches the football itch, and gets the championship game revenue. If they go past 12, it will be to help out the other sports and the network.

Some schools have long down cycles with brief up periods (Kansas State). Others have long up periods with brief down cycles (Michigan football). UConn hoops is in the latter category. They'll be back.

show me profits - won't compare to any major football program

Calhoun built UCONN men's basketball - they were not a national power before him
Auriana also made UCONN women into the power they are - really an amazing coach
