If it was just UF objecting to FSU, the Noles might get in anyways. I don't think it's just UF.

I've also heard that UA and AU don't want FSU. They would be recruiting basically the same area.

They recruit the same areas anyways. I think if there is anyone who would have a problem with this it would be Kentucky and Vandy. They would be forced to chalk up another L every season and give up a patsy game that for them really isn't much of a patsy

Why? One of the biggest misnomers in this whole discussion is the myth that there is a gentleman's agreement between the school presidents that says they will not invite a school from the same state.

This.

A lot of people just assume that Clay Travis's source is right about this suicide pact between UGA, USC and UF.

Everyone now knows the SEC is on the hunt for a 14th school, preferably one that they can add to the SEC East.

INHO, Florida State would be a fantastic fit.

And before anyone tells me it doesn't add TV markets, I saw a poll that says only 30% of people in Florida are Gator fans. 20% are Seminole fans.
LINK

There are 18 million people in Florida. 20% of 18 million is 3.6 million people. That's more than double the population of the entire state of West Virginia, one of the other schools being suggested. And FSU still has a decent national following from their success in the 90s.

Like A&M, they have a very large enrollment (40k, largest school in ACC). Which means they have lots and lots of alumni that will tune in.

FSU has a longstanding rivalry with Florida, but they also have history with South Carolina, Auburn , Georgia, LSU and Miss State.

I'd love to understand that logic.

Alabama currently has 8 players from Florida on their roster.

Auburn has 11 players from Florida on their roster.

Florida State's current roster has 82 players from Florida. 26 from out of state.

Florida's current roster has 75 players from Florida.

So by my count, Florida State is already outrecruiting the Gators in the state of Florida. Or you could say the Gators are outrecruiting the Seminoles nationally. Who knows?

At any rate, Florida has 18 million people. There's a lot of players to go around. Ditto for Texas.

So is the fear that Alabama and Auburn would get half that many Florida players if Florida State was in the SEC?

The poll is not far off, I think in reality it is closer to 40% UF. Some of those other numbers are a little questionable. UCF at 11% and USF at 6%? FAU getting 5% of the state and Miami only 9%? Those just don't make any sense.

It is not an issue of recruiting or competition for UF. UF competes with them anyway whether in the conference or not. It is a matter of not wanting to invite your in-state rival to the grown-up table and getting a greater share of money.

Like others have pointed out though, I am not sure UF is even trying to block them even though that is definitely fan sentiment. My point is, I don't think Slive would act if even one school has an issue. He is not going to try and circumvent the will of one school and try and push something through. It looks like he wants things done with unanimous consent.

FSU right now is the highest-ranked school in the country that might be interested in joining the conference.

Explain to me why this is important? It seems like if we make the SEC the hardest conference, then it will be harder to win a MNC...???

That and UF wouldn't even play the Seminoles if the legislature hadn't gotten involved...

Lots and lots of politics involved.

I don't necessarily blame the Gators though... just looking out for their own interests...

I think they tried to pass legislation and it failed. No actual law exists to have the schools play.

FL will draw a line in the sand against FSU.They will not give up their SEC advantage with recruiting.

I think this is over played. FSU already competes with Florida for recruits IMO. They had huge success in the 90's, national audience and plenty of TV exposure.

adding a new state to the SEC is better than adding another school from an existing SEC state...in theory.
Yes, in theory. I just don't totally buy into that theory. A parallel theory might be if you expand beyond your ability to maintain, you could be in a world of hurt (thinking along military lines, what happened when Napoleon invaded Russia? What happened when Germany got too expansive in WW 2?).

IMO, before we go willy-nilly entering other less proven markets, if we expand to 14 or 16 teams, it would do the SEC good to shore up two of the three flagship football schools in the state, before the rising directional FL schools (UCF, USF) steal a lot of their thunder.

UF should welcome them. It would make their scheduler easier.

FSU brings nothing to the SEC.

Poor academics.
No new TV viewers.
Can't sell out their stadium except UF and Miami games.
Poor fanbase.

FSU will just be another welfare school in the SEC.

Anyone who says it would hurt Florida is nuts. We play them every year and recruit the same players. FSU in the SEC would only help Florida. They will have to play a tougher schedule each week.

Florida State played their first game against Stetson University on September 27, 1947. A nickname for the new school was selected after the first game but before the second game verses Cumberland College. "Seminoles" was the name selected by students, defeating five other finalists: Crackers, Statesmen, Golden Falcons, Indians and Senators

We're 4-1-1 against FSU. Bring it. Of course all the games besides the Music City Bowl were played in the '60s but it's not 25 or 30 L's in row at least.

people, recruiting is not an issue. fsu and the sec schools have already proven that they can all recruit perfectly fine against each other as it is. adding fsu isn't going to change things significantly. fsu will still get their players and the current sec schools will continue to get theirs.

saying that fsu adds nothing is just plain ignorant. they would add several things, most importantly, one of the best athletic programs in the country.

it ridiculous to complain about "making the conference tougher." people, expansion is happening. it's inevitable. if the other conferences are also getting stronger, then any sec change is relative to what others are doing. the sec doesn't want to get left behind so they are being proactive. fortunately, s.o.s. has become a factor again and the sec has a great rep in this regard.
