Could football become a "separate" conference sport?

I know it is probably not likely, but since the NCAA does not run football (crown a champion or sanction bowls), could football run on it's own? EXAMPLE - Texas football in the PAC-10, rest of UT sports stay in BIG 12?
Not sure if I am asking the question clearly.

It is theoretically possible (Notre Dame is in the Big East in all sports except football), and it does happen in cases where a conference does not sponsor a sport (Kentucky is in CUSA I believe for men's soccer which is not an SEC-sponsored sport) but most likely won't happen in this case. Whatever conference t.u. ends up in they will be in for all sports in which the conference participates.

yes of course.
example. Notre Dame.
football, minting their own coinage
rest of sports except hockey, Bigeast
Hockey, some central midwestern alliance.
