But you have to look at who they are playing against.

Their toughest conference game is against Houston.

IF USM moved to a BCS conference it would really help there recruiting and hurt Ole Miss. I know it is a long shot for them to get into the Big 12, but I think they would be a solid team. They can compete with the Baylors and Texas Tech. Plus it would be awesome to see Texas in H'burg for a game.

Boise St would be a great choice.

Seriously?

They really are a glorified community college.

Endowment of 61 million. 6% graduation rate.

Ranked like #545 of national univesities.

Athletic department budget of 16 million, wee.

They are a novelty in football. What else do they bring to the table, are they decent in any other sport?

You might want to brush up on the BCS process a bit.

LINK

There are three standards for determining automatic bid inclusion:
•Average rank of the highest-ranked team in the final BCS standings every year;
•Average conference ranking, which is the final regular-season rankings of all conference teams in the computer rankings used by the BCS each year; and
•Top 25 performance ranking, or the number of teams in the Top 25 of the final BCS standings each year, with adjustments to account for differences in the number of members of each conference.

As you can read in the link, it is unlikely, but a conference could lose their bid.

Could add Houston, SMU, New Mexico and all kinds of other schools. Texas would be more of an over-lord, these new teams would all be fine with games on the LHN and Texas would have a cakewalk to a BCS game every year.

We would have our own network and our own conference. Not too shabby.

indeed...

a little boise state-esque but given the current BCS rules, why not?

go undefeated against scrub competition = BCS bowl game.

Big 12 is gone, which for me is kinda sad since I grew up on Big 8 football. Looking back it seems like the whole league was destined to fail with it's unequal revenue and discontinuing the NU v OU game. Moving the conference HQ and CCG to dallas was the last straw.

Let's break that one down.

1. Highest-ranked team

Texas will likely win the conference every year and be in the top 10 of the BCS standings most seasons, so this one shouldn't be a problem for them.

2. Average conference ranking

This one will be a little harder for them to keep up if it is a case of Texas and the 9 Dwarfs. If A&M, Okie State, and OU leave, the #2 team in the conference is probably Tech or Mizzou. Neither has a strong history as a football power.

3. Top 25 performance ranking

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

I don't see the Mizzous, Techs, Baylors, and so forth finishing the season in the top 25 of the BCS often enough to keep the Big 12 as at least the 6th conference.

Realistically, you have:
A&M-SEC
Texas-Either independent or overlord of the weaklings
OU-Somewhere else (Pac-16 or SEC)
OSU-ditto
Mizzou-(SEC, Big-10, Pac-16)
KU-(Pac-16, Big-10 or Big East)

That leaves:
Texas Tech
Kansas State
Iowa State
Baylor

If it's down to the last four, their best bet is to "merge" with most of the Mountain West (they have the one thing the MWC doesn't, which is a BCS autobid, and it's VERY hard to take those away--see the Big East) leaving something like:
East
Iowa State
Kansas State
Baylor
Texas Tech
UTEP
New Mexico
Air Force
Colorado State

West
Boise State
Wyoming
Fresno State
UNLV
Nevada
BYU
Hawaii
San Diego St.

Not a bad conference, and could probably keep the autobid under the current rules.
