All the dumb griping about WVU being a "yankee" school - Maryland was no child of the confederacy either. And they are a bit more east than southeast. But me, I'd welcome both into the SEC. Today's a new day!

Actually, Maryland was a slave state and probably would have joined the Confederacy, southern sympathies were high there. But, being so close to Washington, and the yankees in Pennsylvania, it was more or less filled with northern troops from the beginning.

The conference is called the S-E-C, not the C-S-A

Maryland was the closest boarder state to joining the Confederacy, but Federal troops captured the legislators to keep them from voting to secede. John Wilkes Booth and the Surratts were from Maryland. However, that doesn't really matter with the SEC ...and Maryland is now a true yankee state. the majority of the population pretty much resides in the DC suburbs and Baltimore.

Maryland ultimately wants to go to the Big Ten. Paterno wants another Eastern school or two in order to make Penn State a better fit. A Maryland/Virginia combination would probably be highly attractive to the Big Ten, and would be perfect, politically, for the SEC, giving Virginia Tech an excuse to come to the SEC. But, that may be pie in the sky. What is more certain is that FSU doesn't seem to be fully committed to the ACC, and they, too would be an excellent addition--no new markets, but, kind of like Nebraska to the Big Ten, too big of a name to let pass if they are willing to come.

Hell I'd like Maryland. Would give me more of a reason to get to visit family.

Maryland is not technically south of the Mason-Dixon Line, the line is the border of Maryland and Pennsylvania. It's about them. That said, Maryland is not a southern state, culturally. They have been eyeing the Big Ten longingly for a few years. Maryland isn't fond of the Tobacco Road Mafia. Maryland would also love to be in that Big Ten academic consortium.

Lol. Pretty much like Florida.

But...

That would be "border" state. But truth be told that same claim to nearly confederate could be made for Kentucky and Missouri; and remember, West Virginia's roots were in Virginia, until they decided to secede from the secessionist mother state (VA) and remain Federal.
