Several reasons.

The first is that his buyout is payable over six years and offset by any football related income, including media work. At 64 years old, he would have no incentive to work again.

Negotiate a lump sum that is not subject to an offset. That way he can get a chunk of money now, and still go to media work or even coach again.

The last one would be if he has any skeletons in his closet during his time at LSU. If so, there might have been some discussions about bringing those out and attempting to fire him for cause.

depends on what all is in the contract. maybe he would like a lump sum so he can take another job even if it isn't coaching.

maybe it helps save face somewhat. i mean it's still an incredible amount of money.

remember this is a guy who told us we are spoiled.

I have no idea why we expect him to negotiate a buyout. Orgeron didn't

He also won a national championship and his buyout was less than half of Kelly’s

This is dumb, nobody held a gun to your administrations head when they made this deal. I genuinely dislike Brian Kelly but he has every right to receive full payment.
