It doesn't matter who their assistant are.

Obviously Saban and Meyer surround themselves with good coaches, but it's THEM that is the common thread.

Saban had been thru 5 OCs, he loses Smart, and a bunch of other position coaches. It doesn't matter

Meyer loses Mullen and Gonzalez at UF. Loses Chris Ash and Herman at OSU.

Point is, the head coach is what stirs the drink, period. We can have the best coach in America at every single position, if Ed sucks at HC, the team sucks.
You're talking about different managment styles here basically. And you've pegged both the most effective for HC in CFB. The question isn't what's the common thread, the question is how did they make/form that correlation, how did they make the thread so common.

To me, it's about resouces and focus. I don't know, and neither does anyone here unless they by some miracle played/coached for all of them, but maybe those great HCs are focusing their energy on managing and coaching their coordinators and coaches. Note I said focus, not 100% of their effort. Yes there is some interaction with players, maybe alot. But at the end of the day, every day, their focus (maybe) isn't on the name and title, but on making sure that assistant is A) doing what is needed so all pull in same direction, B) making sure the level under you knows what you know, communication and C) Oversight and accountability of those next level guys

I think it even goes beyond that, the university president and AD along with big boosters have all got to be on same page with the coach. Those top coaches you listed have a great way of setting that in motion. Some good coachs lack that ability so the end results don't show.
