What about Dan Mullen to Nebraska?

I think this would be as close to a home run hire as Nebraska could possibly wish for. He's done a remarkable job at Mississippi State. I don't think he gets enough credit as a big time coaching commodity. Having State ranked at #1 for 5 weeks is borderline unfathomable. He's pretty much reached his ceiling in Starkville and wouldn't be surprised to see him follow Prescott out the door.
Thoughts?

Nebraska has a coach currently. In his first year even.

Nebraska is not shitcanning Riley after one season.

3-9 or 4-8 and both Riley and that AD get the boot - especially if some bigger names show interest. Mullen would mesh well within the B1G, imo

How would that work? If the AD goes away then who hires the next head coach? You aren't thinking it through.
When Nebraska replaces the AD then maybe we can talk about a new coach.

The AD will be gone.

Probably some type of search committee.

Commissioned by who?
It is rare for interim ADs to make hiring choices.

I have no idea. From lurking some Nebraska boards most think the AD is gone for sure and that Riley follows suit unless there is a major change within the next month. It was a garbage hire to begin with, I don't know why you're so adamant that Riley is guaranteed another year. His buyout isn't some ridiculous number either

What is your opinion on Mullen coming to Lincoln? Seems like a perfect fit to me

he wont go there he hates high pressure fan bases

Well sure they think that, this season is a disaster and then want a fall guy. Them getting one is another story.

I won't disagree with that.

I am not adamant about it, I am just saying it is premature to speculate about new Nebraska coaches when we are three steps away (fire AD, Hire AD, Fire coach) from that decision.
I do think them firing him after a season would be a PR disaster, and if they do so there is almost no way they would get a coach in a stable job like Mullen. Their job will be toxic for yet another decade, and they will be thrusting that toxic brand into the most competitive hiring market in years.
They need to sit on their mistake another year IMHO, but they could not I will admit.

Pretty sure he wanted the Penn State job in 2011 and got passed up

We dont want to piss away 3-4 years again like we did with Bill Callahan. Riley will never have success here in Lincoln. Its best to end it fast before it ruins multiple seasons.

Ill take any coach with a decent success record right now over the nitwit we have now.

I would see them hiring Bert from Arky

You know it is completely normal for all programs, even major ones, to strike out on coaching hires every now and then. Yall act like Callahan was some crazy hardship put on the program that never happens to anyone. It wasn't a rare thing, all programs rise and fall.
What IS a rare thing is firing a coach after one year. OU did it 25 years ago but since then it hasn't been a common practice for a reason- it turns off future coaches.
A program like Nebraska- which has now fired two nine win coaches in modern history- has to be careful how it treats the current guy because it will directly determine who is willing to take the job after him.
I have seen Nebraska posters elsewhere claim that by overpaying that issue can be overcome, but honestly Nebraska doesn't have a ton more money than a USC (either of them). It can't risk thinking it can bully its way to an elite coach.
All together, it would be a mistake to fire Riley IMHO but I don't run your program. I am just making guesses based on a logical course of action.

They tried to poach him away from Arkansas last year. He doesn't want that job

Mullen could be a lifer at Miss St.
I really think he likes it there and for all the talent they lost last year, Prescott still has them at 6-2. Once Saban and Miles move on (depending on the hires), Mullen could be in great shape to move up a notch or two in the west.

There are things in his file from the FL days that make him ineligible for some of the higher visibility schools. Miss State was willing to swallow it, but Penn State and those types of programs will not.
