I still think Derek Mason from Stanford would be the best hire.
I agree. He's proven himself as a great defensive mind capable of adapting and stopping high powered offenses. That ability, along with familiarity in recruiting to a higher academic standard, could keep games close. Anything can happen in a close game.

Exactly.

And I think it's easier to build a scrappy, hard-fighting defensive team than to build a high-powered offense. In the past, I'd say close games were the last thing a Vandy fan wanted, but the attitude has changed from "we'll find a way to lose" to "we'll find a way to win".

Not sure I agree a scrappy defense is the answer. When you're playing some teams, you're just gonna give up 30. The question becomes, Can you score 30?
The game's changed a lot. Maybe Stanford is proof it hasn't changed as much as I think.

Is that really true though? That's what everyone thought about A&M but LSU has had their number. Everyone thought that about Oregon but Stanford shuts them down regularly. I'm not saying Vanderbilt will have that ability in the near future, but we have actually had top 25 defenses the last 2 years, I believe. It's a more realistic expectation than going out and getting the flashy, explosive players necessary for a high-scoring offense, at least to form a foundation around at a still building program.
