yeah, Houston is apparently trying to put something together that will persuade him to stay. Something along the lines of doubling his 1.25 mill/yr salary.

Have to give him at least 5 times more to keep him at a mid-major instead of a P5 that he is apparently more than a little interested in.

That might be their first offer, but I could see them going to 3M. However, he's going to want more, like upgrades in facilities, more media/marketing/recruiting $, etc.... They can't give that to him (at least not in the short term), and SC already has that in place.

Poors.

In all honestly, no matter what SEC team came calling, I'd find it hard to believe that UH could match what he'd be making in this conference compared to where he is now.

This. I'll be shocked if it comes to pass. But I just don't see it.

I was skeptical, too, but I really think Herman is the man now. Any reasons why you don't see it? Just curious... I like hearing other people's take on it.

You would be surprised. Thanks to the MBA program and Houston's oil focus there are a few UH millionaire alums. They could pay him whatever anyone else could afford, what would make him leave is a better opportunity.

Money whipping coaches is a very overrated tactic in 2015. Everyone has money.

I personally think he wants the Texas job. I wouldn't be surprised if he stayed just one more year at Houston to see what happens at Texas. Unless the paycheck is good enough, he might stay put.

That's why I think the facilities are a bigger feature in this situation. Our new facilities are built, (suites/dorms, weight/training rooms, locker rooms, IPF, player lounges, tutoring center.) The last phase is the Football Administration building and that plan is being announced this week. Houston can say they'll try to match us in salary, but really I don't think they can if we go over $4M, however, they can't commit to the millions now in new facilities that we already have in place. Even if they did, they would be years out from having them, while at SC, they're already open.

I feel like South Carolina is in general a good job when meshing expectations with resources. Fan support is at around 80k per game, they are competitive in the SEC East, but not expected to win the division every year. They will pay whatever the coach is worth to an extent, and they won't fire you for going 8-4 a lot.

Overall, he has no ties to the state or the conference. Now, lots of coaches in the SEC had no ties before taking the gig, but it's a bit of a flag.

He was very patient in taking the UH gig, so there's no real reason to think he's itching to get out after only a season. Especially if he's a Texas guy and really wants that job.

Herman is one of the hottest names in college sports. There is going to be a lot of competition for his services. We all love Carolina, but this isn't the best job currently open. If he wants a specific job, it makes sense to wait.

Herman is also an offense-first guy. I personally think that USC's identity is based on physical, intense defense.

There is so much smoke around Herman, and has been since before Spurrier resigned, that it almost makes too much sense to be anything but a smokescreen.

Smart makes a lot more sense in terms if what he can bring, and what USC offers, particularly because he's an SEC guy with deep roots. He's also made it clear that he wants this job.

None of this is to say I don't like Herman, or that I don't think he'd be a great coach and a homerun hire. I'm just not convinced that he's going to take the gig, is all.

South Carolina people say they have their guy. That means they have Smart in place to be their next head coach.

Especially with Strong being on the hot seat. But, what guarantee is there that Texas would hire him over someone else? He's taking a chance passing up $4 million to take a shot at Texas that might not happen. What if Houston implodes next year?

If he's following the Urban Meyer playbook, he leaves while the interest is high. Urban did all he could at Utah by going undefeated, then took the UF job before Alex Smith left and Utah ran the risk of having a rebuilding year.

I'm not comparing the UF job to ours, but Urban knew when to get out while his demand was at its peak. I can't imagine CTH being MORE highly sought next year. Especially if the inmates running the asylum in Austin won't be happy unless Bill Cowher or someone is walking the sidelines.

I think ultimately CTH waits, but there is precedent to think that he's best-off to leave now. The question is does the job he wants want him?

What are the chances that Strong is really fired or leaves Texas this year? I know what the major media is saying, but really, how hot is the seat there?

The only way Strong leaves Texas for Miami is if he really doesn't care about money. Taking a nice pay cut plus absolving them of the buyout would not be the best move financially
