EJ and Ray Buchanan are probably the two best guitar players that nobody has heard of. I was aware of his work, without being a specific fan. When your biggest hit (or hits - see Joe Satriani) is an instrumental, it's hard for people to become a fan of the artist.

For other old farts like me, if you remember Christopher Cross' debut album (won a bunch of Grammys) with "Sailing" and "Ride like the Wind", there is a song called "Minstrel Gigolo", and a young Eric Johnson plays a blistering guitar on a soft rock song and makes it work.
