No one wants to coach the New Orleans Saints.

Why is everyone in such a rush?

This isn't like college football where you need to hire a coach right away to salvage recruiting.

Probably don't really need anyone in place until the Scouting Combine.

There’s a lot to do when you get a HC job, you don’t just show up on the sidelines.

You’re setting up you’re staff, so if you’re late in the cycle you have a smaller circle of candidates for those positions as well

You’re setting up offseason workout goals and plans or atleast coordinating with the current and incoming strength staffs on expectations and scheduling the calendar for scouting, practice, and other events in the offseason

NFL draft scout season is already in full swing with multiple all star games in progress or completed already. There’s already an awkward transition that takes places usually where the previous regime will stay on through the draft because they did all the prework, so delaying that hire just delays any ability to communicate to your scouting team what you want to look for in players and how to fit your scheme

Free agency is also about a month away, you need to have a plan to on how you will leverage FA and the cap (especially in the saints case)

So while I don’t think it dooms you by any means, it certainly makes the hill a bit steeper to climb in year 1 if you are last in the door compared to the rest of the league

That is all to say, I do think the league needs to change the rules to create a clear window for coaching changes instead of all these different scenarios for when a person can or can’t interview
