Most successful I can think of is Joe Pa taking over when his boss, Rip Engle, retired. Guess you can consider Cholly Mac a successful promotion from within.
Any other really successful ones come to mind?

Fulmer . . . I don't think he was necessarily a good coach but he was successful.

Promoting from within is neither good or bad.
It brings some good things with it, but a MAJOR fault is the tendency to do things
"as we have always done it"
and therefore locks out new ideas in a lot of situations....not a MUST, but it should be a BIG consideration in the promoting process.
