Best-case scenario (for LSU), ND doesn't make the playoffs and hires an outsider like Fickell. In that case, a number of his former assistant coaches might be willing to move, and Kelly will at least have some staff members in place.

Worst-case scenario, ND makes the CFP and/or hires Freeman. In either case, the ND coaches will likely remain up north, and Kelly will have to build a staff completely from scratch.

Who is going to tell him?

That has not yet happened. It has been rumored, and it is likely to happen, but it has not yet happened. ND has made no mention of it on their website, and none of the major outlets have confirmed it.
