They were an OT loss away from being in ATL. Losing Brody croyle the year before then prothro the year after was sheer bad luck for Shula.

No doubt...but BAMA had been making poor decision after poor decision and dealing with nonsense for a while before that point. BAMA wasn't exactly the world's best destination at the time...go look up articles written about Rich Rod passing on the job. They're pretty brutal.

I wonder if bama would have ever hired him if he hadn't won a title at LSU? Nick had aspirations to go to the NFL, I think winning one just pushed it a long quicker, but he was always going to leave LSU.

I'd say hiring a former SEC coach with a title in his pocket does look more appealing, yeah. haha And yes...LSU was always going to be a stepping stone for Saban to the NFL. That's why I say he felt he left LSU on basically good terms. No one, despite all of his talk of planting oak trees and shite to the contrary, ever thought he was going to year in and year out continue to pass on the NFL. But...I don't think he'd have ever left LSU for what would have only been a lateral move to another university UNLESS said university would have paid him substantially more than LSU. After all, the guy is a mercenary, despite what the BAMA fans currently think.
