Texas boomed quite nicely back in the 60's and early 70's under Daryl Royal.

SMU was hurt more by Texas, Aggy, Baylor and Tech leaving for the Big 12.

Not sure you were around when that happened. There is a lot of damage done when the program literally shuts its locker room down for a year. In fact, the then president of SMU kept the program closed for another year until he could make sure things were corrected enough. Hell, they even brought Forrest Gregg in to coach and it still didn't work.

SMU was the first and only FB program to get the death penalty after it was conceived. The NCAA monitored the resulting damage and was hesitant to dole another out after that, although Alabama came close, and Florida was also in a pinch years ago that should have drawn one.

Talking about the state economy.......

Someone said that TVs in the South in the 1960's killed Minnesota.

Even in the 60's and 70's Texas had very few football games on and I know Bama did not have a regular season SEC game on tv live until in the late 1970's

great hire can turn a program around but winning a division and Conference titles can’t bd won by any school.

The right coach can turn Tennessee around but it is a tough row to hoe.

2 reasons

High school football in Tennessee is weaker than most other SEC States..

A lot of border States who fight for your athletes especially in Memphis where most of your athletes are.

That is indeed a problem for the Vols.

Meh....recruiting wasn't an issue for Butch, he just did a shitty job developing that talent. UT can easily turn it around.

Back when the NCAA controlled TV games, no college could be on national TV ore than three times in a two year period. Alabama did have games on earlier than what you stated. The game between LSU and Alabama back in the early 70's when Johnny Musso was the running back for Bama was shown nationally.
