My personal take falls somewhere in line with this.

For whatever reason, Les couldn't find a guy last season - either the money wasn't right, didn't feel like the choices were a good fit, whatever... it just didn't happen.

So instead of making a reach hire for a potential boom or bust guy... why not just move the staff around a bit... for "continuity" (which at the time we thought meant scheme, but I now believe it to mean between the staff). Now, if Malloreto work out then great... if not, and they look shitacular (as has happened) easy to move them back around and bring in someone new that we actually really like and really fits.
