Also see Texas A&M as an example of what not to do. Fired RC and now they have been in the shite tank for what seems forever.

You could look at it inversely as coach firings are everything. Most schools will fire a coach with absolutely no backup plan. Change for the sake of change does not always work out. You may get a short term boost from the fan base (see Kiffin, Lane) but history shows that:
1) Top notch programs that fire decent (above .500) coaches
2) There are only a few top performers out there. The situation has to be perfect in order for it to work out (see Spurrier, Steve).
3) Talent is more spread out than it used to be. The conditions in the coaching world have changed drastically over the past 10 years.
- There is more television exposure for all programs. Living in NY 10 years ago, you would get 1 SEC, 2 Big 10, 2 Big East, and 1 Pac 10, and Notre Dame games each week - 7 games. This year you could easily get 1 from each of the mid major conferences (6), notre dame, 3 pac 10, 4 SEC, 5 Big 10, 3-4 big 12, and 2-3 Big East games per week - that's 24-26 games.
- Less scholarships available than there used to be.
- All elite programs have pretty decent facilities.
- Non-elite programs are hiring high profile coaches to even the score (see Arkansas, South Carolina, North Carolina)
You just can't expect to win 10 games every year.

Well, yeah. I mean look at Florida last year, Saban @ LSU, Miles @ LSU, or Mark Richt's record. Absolutely great coaches, but all have had their down years. Yeah, you can bring up Pete Carroll, but they have an unbelievable advantage being in the country's second biggest city, with lots of good looking arse, on the beach etc;. If UCLA could ever get their act together and get a stable coach they might be able to give USC a run for their money.
